WSU Governor Emerita Washington, 18 students to join David Mackenzie Honor Society at April 27 ceremony
Jacquelin Washington, a Detroit resident who served on Wayne State University's Board of Governors from 2001 to 2008, has been named this year\'s honorary inductee by the David Mackenzie Honor Society. She retired in 1999 as president and CEO of Planned Parenthood of Southeast Michigan. A graduate of Fisk University, Washington holds a master's degree in social work from Wayne State. Previous Honorary inductees have included former WSU Presidents Irvin D. Reid and David Adamany, Honors College Dean Jerry Herron, the late WSU Governor Emerita Mildred "Millie" Jeffrey, Sonny Elliot, and Helen Thomas.
"Governor Emerita Washington is emblematic of the spirit of service and commitment we want society members to have," says Liza Lagman Sperl '96, adviser for the Honors College and the honor society. "She is a tireless advocate for women, a passionate supporter of education, and someone committed to preserving legal rights and access to higher learning."
The society - one of the most prestigious groups at WSU - is named for David Mackenzie, the first dean of what is now the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. The society was founded in 1981 through a merger of Karyatides, the former women's honor society founded in 1931, and the Mackenzie Honor Society, organized in 1926. Members are chosen for their exceptional contributions to the welfare and development of the university and the community.
The 2009 program will be the 83rd annual reunion for the David Mackenzie Honor Society. Eighteen graduating seniors will be recognized for their outstanding academic achievement and contributions to the Wayne State community. They will be inducted along with Governor Emerita Washington on April 27, 2009. A public reception will be held in the McGregor Memorial Conference Center at 5:30 p.m., followed by a private dinner for the society members and their families.
