Urban Scholars/Leaders mentorship opportunity provides $500 stipend
UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY FOR STUDENTS OF THE HONORS PROGRAM
The Honors Program seeks applications for Urban Scholars/Leaders Program Mentors. Created in 2006, Wayne State University's Urban Scholars/Leaders Scholarship Program is designed to recognize and promote outstanding leaders and scholars from the City of Detroit.
What is the Urban Scholars/Leaders Scholarship Program
The Urban Scholars/Leaders Scholarship Program is a comprehensive program offering talented students academic support, including mentoring, educational training, sponsored research, and community based service learning. Unlike many merit based scholarships, which provide only monetary assistance, the Urban Scholars/Leaders Scholarship Program engages undergraduate students at Wayne State University in leadership skills training, coaching, and mentoring provided by senior level Honors students, supportive faculty members, and community leaders from both the private and public sectors. The program links scholarship with leadership for purposes of developing the future leaders of Detroit.

Honors Program Mentors will be responsible for supporting Urban Scholars/Leaders Scholarship recipients' transition to Wayne State University. Support may include the following:

supplemental academic tutoring

study skill training
-
class shadowing
-
student life orientation.
Mentors are expected to spend a minimum of 40 hours per semester in this supportive role.
How to apply
Successful applicants will receive a $500 book stipend and the use of a laptop computer while serving as a mentor. Interested candidates must complete the Urban Scholars/Leaders Program Mentor Application and return to Dr. Elizabeth Barton, Honors Program, 2100 Undergraduate Library by July 14, 2006.
