More than 500 Honors freshmen and their families and friends arrived at the historic Redford Theatre in Detroit on Sunday, October 11 for a screening of Charlie Chaplin's classic 1936 film, "Modern Times." The Redford Theatre, which opened in 1928, is the one of the only regularly operating neighborhood movie theatres in Detroit and is the last surviving neighborhood "movie palace."

In addition to the film, Honors students and their guests enjoyed a performance from one of the Redford's resident organists, David Calendine. Following his performance, Calendine provided a brief history of the theatre and historic pipe organ. Honors Dean Jerry Herron welcomed the crowd to the event and connected the film and the screening to the Honors freshman curriculum.

Attending the Redford Theatre each fall has become one of the favorite events among freshman Honors students. As part of their Honors Cultural Passport, the freshmen have the opportunity to experience a number of Detroit's landmark venues, including the Eastern Market, DSO performances at Orchestra Hall, and an opera at the Detroit Opera House.
