Honors sophomore bringing TedX to Wayne State

Any students or faculty looking for an idea showcase need to look no further than the TedX event on Friday, April 17.

Organized by Honors College Sophomore Manasi Mahajan, TedX, which stands for Technology, Entertainment, and Design, brings together students and faculty from different disciplines with the goal of idea sharing.

"People here are doing amazing things, and there is no platform for people to share their ideas," Mahajan said.

According to the organization's website, www.ted.com, TED is a non-profit organization devoted to spreading ideas in the form of 20-minute presentations that cover all sorts of topics ranging from science to global issues. Their goal is to make great ideas accessible and spark conversation.

TedX is an independently run TED event in communities around the world.

The theme of the event is "When Pigs Fly." According to Mahajan, it is all about showcasing people making the impossible possible, the pushing of one's personal and professional boundaries, and people exploring their limits and pushing them farther.

In addition to students and faculty presenters, there will be official TED presentations. The event, which takes place in the Bernath Auditorium, will also be shown in various locations around campus via simulcast.

Following the event a reception will be held where speakers can interact with guests and each other.

Mahajan has firsthand knowledge of the benefits TedX can have on learning. While in high school, her teachers used TED videos to facilitate classroom learning and discussions. "We always used videos to inspire us to think outside the box."

Now she wants to bring those same ideas to Wayne State.

"Ted has been such a huge part of my education for a long time now…we are really excited to have TED come to Wayne State," she said. "We hope to make this an annual event. There are so many great things happening here at Wayne and this is going to be a way to showcase these things."

Mahajan is still looking for presenters. If you have an idea and would like to present, she can be reached at manasi.mahajan@wayne.edu.
