Five freshmen earn Rosa Parks scholarship

Five freshmen from the Irvin D. Reid Honors College's class of 2019 were recognized in the Detroit News on June 9 as Rosa Park Scholars. They were selected based on their academic skills, community involvement, economic need and their belief in the ideals of the Detroit civil rights icon Rosa Parks.

Three recipients will be Honors College students, while two will be members of the college's Community of Scholars.

The award winners are:

Amera Ahmed

Honors College

High School: Detroit International Academy for Young Women

Career Plans: Accounting

Achievements: Salutatorian; scholar; Irvin D. Reid Honors College of Wayne State University; Detroit Urban Scholars scholarship.

Akasha Bethel

Community of Scholars

High School: Mount Clemens High School

Career Plans: Journalism, film, photography, and painting

Achievements: MAB Awards 2014, 2nd place, digital media experience; Orchard Lake Student Film Festival 2013, 2nd place, news, 3rd place, short film; vice president, National Honors Society; president, Key Club; Youth Appreciation Award 2014, Detroit Optimist Club; Youth Appreciation Award 2014, Clinton Township Optimist Club

Yessica Gonzalez
