Heather Walter-McCabe, JD, MSW
Heather Walter-McCabe is an Associate Professor with a Joint Appointment at the Wayne State University School of Social Work and Law School. She also serves as adjunct professor at the Richard M. Fairbanks School of Public Health teaching Global Public Health Law and Ethics.
Professor Walter-McCabe's research is done at the intersection of law, social work, and public health where she examines the impact of policy on health equity. Prior to entering the academy, Professor Walter-McCabe served on an interprofessional medical team as the social worker and her work has remained largely interprofessional in nature. As a result of this work, she studied and provided education on interprofessional teamwork and skills. She also served as the Executive Director of the Indiana Partnership to Prevent Violent Injury and Death. As a part of her work, she presented legislative testimony and media interviews in addition to her responsibilities for the day to day operations of the program.
Professor Walter-McCabe also participated in several leadership training programs over the course of her career. She was a trainee in the Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental Disabilities program (funded by Maternal Child Health) at Riley Hospital for Children, first as a social work student and again as a law student. She was a fellow and later a mentor with the Mid-America Public Health Leadership Institute. She continues her leadership activity by serving on several executive boards for professional organizations and local non-profits.
