Matthew Lacouture

Biography

 Matthew Lacouture is Assistant Professor of Teaching in the Irvin D. Reid Honors College at Wayne State University. He earned his Ph.D. in Political Science from Wayne State in 2021. His research focuses on the comparative politics of protest, labor, and authoritarianism, with a regional emphasis on the Middle East and North Africa. Matt’s research has been supported by several fellowships, including a 2018-19 Fulbright grant in Jordan. His book project, “From Hegemony to Mobilization: Activism under Authoritarianism in Neoliberal Jordan”, asks: How do social movements emerge under highly repressive conditions? His work has been published in the International Review of Social History, The Middle East Report Online, and elsewhere, and is forthcoming in Comparative Political Studies. Before returning to Wayne State, Matt held teaching appointments as an Assistant Instructional Professor in the College at the University of Chicago and as a Visiting Assistant Professor at the University of Massachusetts Boston in the School for Global Inclusion and Social Development. He has taught courses across the social sciences and humanities, including courses on global development, human rights, Middle East politics and history, political theory, and research methods. Matt is also a committed mentor and advisor, having advised many students’ research projects, master’s theses, and scholarship applications (e.g., Fulbright). He has also developed and taught courses and workshops in research design and writing.
