Register now for fifth annual conference!
October 18, 2008
Honors sponsors a Model United Nations (MUN) conference annually for 100 high school students from around Michigan. MUN helps students learn the art of diplomacy and compromise while better understanding how the United Nations operates.
High school students are needed as MUN ambassadors; WSU students, faculty and staff are needed to volunteer as facilitators.
What is it?
MUN simulates a real session of the United Nations. A different global issue is highlighted each year. Recent issues include resolution and diplomacy in Iraq, human rights and genocide in Sudan, and nuclear weapons in North Korea.
What happens?
Each high school participant is named an MUN ambassador and assigned to represent a particular country.
Ambassadors receive background materials in advance to familiarize themselves with the topic and to develop an understanding of the global issue being debated. Ambassadors have specialized roles within each country; members work together to draft resolutions based on their country's position on the issue being debated.
Ambassadors convene for a General Assembly hearing and present their country's resolution on the issue. The General Assembly votes on the resolutions; the one receiving the most votes is adopted.
Wayne State University volunteers register participants; aid ambassadors with their duties; facilitate debate; help draft resolutions; and assist with set up and tear down of the event.
