What is HealthPro Start?
HealthPro Start is a unique program leading to a professional degree in one of nine areas:
- Pharmacy
- Clinical Laboratory Sciences
- Physical Therapy
- Mortuary Science
- Occupational Therapy
- Anatomic Pathologists' Assistant
- Physician Assistant Studies
- Radiation Therapy Technology
- Radiologic Technology
- Pharmaceutical Sciences
Acceptance to HealthPro Start guarantees you admission to your program of choice within the Eugene Applebaum College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences as long as continuation criteria (detailed below) are met. This program is only open to incoming freshmen.
HealthPro Start trains innovators and critical thinkers, nurturing future leaders by treating students as part of the Pharmacy and Health Sciences community. The program emphasizes mentoring and research opportunities for and provides immediate and ongoing contact with program faculty and students. HealthPro Start undergraduates also are Honors students and must meet the requirements set forth by the Honors College.
HealthPro Start minimum requirements
- GPA of 3.50 (recalculated, including weighting for AP/honors classes)
- Minimum ACT score of 25
- Explanation of experience (describe the amount of time devoted to the activity) in these areas:
- Health care
- Community service
- Team activities (for example, athletics, debate)
- Leadership
- High school extracurricular activities
- Employment
- Summer activities
- Submission of a one-page typed essay describing why you are pursuing HealthPro Start and why you should be accepted.
- Two letters of recommendation:
- One from a high school teacher, counselor or administrator who is familiar with your extracurricular activities, team and/or leadership skills; and
- One from a nonfamily member who can address your healthcare experience, community service and/or employment
If you meet the minimum requirements and complete a separate HealthPro Start application, you will be invited to campus for a series of interviews with representatives from the Eugene Applebaum College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences and Honors College. The campus visit will include a tour of the facilities at the college.
Continuing in HealthPro Start
- Good standing and active membership in Honors College
- Maintain an overall 3.5 GPA
- Maintain an overall 3.0 grade-point average in biology, chemistry, physics and math courses
- Complete the prerequisite coursework for the desired program
- Participate in the HealthPro Start seminars
- Demonstrate continuing activity in volunteer work related to health care
- Attend orientation sessions each fall as new HealthPro Start members are introduced
- Participate in information/recruitment sessions for new students.
Your application package to Honors must include:
- Admission to Wayne State University by Jan. 15 (apply online at admissions.wayne.edu)
- Completed HealthPro Start application (download at honors.wayne.edu)
- Submission of high school transcript
- Submission of ACT scores
- Indication of 3.5 grade-point average on the application
- Details of honors received in high school
- A one-page essay “Why Pursue HealthPro Start” and why you should be accepted
- Explanation of experience in areas listed in “minimum requirements”
- Letters of recommendation as listed in “minimum requirements”
