Cultural Passport

Honors studentsDiscover Detroit's unique culture
The Cultural Passport is a special offering for Honors freshmen that provides free or discounted admission to area cultural institutions. It introduces Honors students to Detroit and all it has to offer.

The Passport provides you with one or two opportunities each semester to experience a special event that syncs up with study topics in the Honors signature course, City One and City Two.

Passport events have a broad range. When the automotive industry was discussed in City One, students visited the Detroit Institute of Arts to view the Diego Rivera murals Detroit Industry and see the special exhibition The Photography of Charles Sheeler: American Modernist, because Sheeler photographed the historic Rouge Factory. After seeing the Sheeler exhibit, students toured the Rouge Factory.

Other Passport events have included attending the final dress rehearsal of I Hate Hamlet, at WSU’s Hilberry Theatre (the only graduate repertory theatre in the country), and Tosca at the Detroit Opera House.

Enhance your learning
Students in Honors 1000 are required to participate in Passport events because the events connect to classroom studies and enhance the learning experience. They help build community – what better way to get to know fellow students than through carpooling to the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department’s Water Works Park (toured in December 2005 when students studied the city’s water system), or spending a Friday at the DIA, taking in beautiful artwork and enjoying the band playing in the Rivera Court? Passport events provide students with a common set of experiences. Events are discussed in class and build a feeling of unity.

You receive a Passport that is stamped at each event. At the end of the semester, you turn in your Passports for grading. If you do not participate in a required Passport event, you lose one-half a grade in HON 1000 or 2000 (City One or City Two).
